JURY'S STATEMENT
Deutscher Jugendvideopreis 2005 - 2nd prize
"Scarlet" is a cartoon, that deals with a topic that is rather unusual for its genre: one experiences Romania's tattered society in the socialist era from the viewpoint of a child. The eight-year old girl is being dogged by bad luck: first she gets punished at school, then, due to scarlet fever she is under quarantine at a hospital for days and at last she gets diddled by tricksters at the front door. Astrid Rieger convinces with the right timing and the right kind of style. The characters win over with their gesture, their facial expression and their lightness. The situation in Romania is adequately transported by the plain and clear camera angles.
